Butterfly Organizations
If you really want to up your game as a butterfly hobbyist in the Carolinas, I recommend joining the Carolina Butterfly Society (CBS) and the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). (Click the logos below to visit their websites.) By joining the Carolina Butterfly Society, you'll have the opportunity to sign up for butterfly field trips with experienced butterflyers. It may be your best chance to see rare butterflies that may not be with us in years to come if we don't change our ways. CBS also hosts an annual butterfly symposium in the fall.
Membership in the North American Butterfly Association comes with a subscription to two great magazines: American Butterflies and Butterfly Gardener, as well as access to back issues online. [My all-time favorite issue features a great article on how to identify Fiery, Sachem, and Whirlabout Skippers (Vol. 30: No. 1). Sachems and Fiery Skippers are two of our most numerous skippers in Western North Carolina.]
Cheers,
Heather
